Cirencester ABC duo Lewis and Johnny Varey were both amongst the medals in Bristol Box Cup.

Lewis, 11, who is on a run of five consecutive victories, boxed Tom Carty (Repton) for the 42-44kg category title and dictated the pace from the off, catching his opponent with straight punches, putting together the cleaner work and coming off the better in the exchanges.

Lewis picked off Carty, which resulted in him winning on a unanimous points decision and getting his hands on the gold.

Fellow Ciren boxer Johnny Varey beat Kallum Cesay, of London’s Omnibus Loxford ABC, in the semi-finals of the 36-38kg competition.

From the bell, Johnny, far the shorter of the two boys, took the fight to the highly-rated Cesay, landing straight left hand punches and mixing up his combinations, and he rolled on to take a comfortable unanimous points decision.

He was pitted against Harry Brown, from City of Portsmouth ABC, in the final and he attacked straight away, catching the Southern Areas champion with some cracking combination punches.

Brown was battling back gamely, landing his own point-scoring shots, and after an entertaining final round, the Ciren camp were dismayed to see the Portsmouth youngster awarded the win on a split decision, with Johnny taking the silver medal.

Cirencester ABA coach Simon Knowles said: “My heart goes out to Johnny - as far as we are concerned, he bought the gold medal home with him. It’s been a great six months since the club was opened. We have silver and gold medals from the Bristol Box Cup to add to three western counties champions.”
