KELLY Morgan’s trainer Richard Farnan believes that the former British javelin record holder has the potential to fight for a world title.

Morgan makes her professional debut on the New Generation at the Grange Drive card Community Centre on Saturday, June 27 and while Farnan admits that it is tough trying to get the Swindon-based middleweight matched up he believes that the 34-year-old has what it takes to challenge for a world crown.

“The only thing that Nikki Adler and Christina Hammer have on Kelly is experience,” Farnan said.

“Kelly hits so hard, we managed to take that explosive power she used from throwing the javelin into her punching.

“Don’t get me wrong, there is still a lot of work to be done, but once she gets that experience then she can target the top three at both middleweight and super-middle.”

Farnan, who guided Kelvin Young to the IBO inter-continental super-middleweight crown and Tariq Quaddus to the British Masters Bronze light-heavyweight title, says that he has not changed his training routines for Morgan, who also represented England on the netball court, just because she is a woman.

“Gym work is gym work, it doesn’t matter who you are as far as I’m concerned,” the trainer added. “I’m not doing anything different with Kelly that I do with Tariq.

“We are not at the same number of reps yet, but we are working towards that.

“Because Kelly has trained as a professional athlete it does make it easier, she picks up things very quickly.”

Farnan also believes that, because Morgan has been sparring with men from the beginning, she has become even stronger.

“I sparred a few rounds with Kelly the other day and someone asked me if I held back, the simple answer was no,” he said.

“You can’t hold back with Kelly, she hits so hard. She sparred with Danny Bharj last week and he is so elusive and fast Kelly had to learn how to cut the ring down.

“She spars with (white-collar heavyweight boxer) Rich Loveday so she is not only in the ring with people her own weight but also heavier ones too.

“Once this fight is out of the way, hopefully we can go up to Sheffield and do a bit of sparring with (Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world amateur champion) Savannah Marshall.”
