PROMOTER Keith Mayo would love to see Kelvin Young vie for the biggest domestic title of his career roared on by a fervent Swindon crowd.

Young (17-4-1) has been pencilled in for a shot at the English super-middleweight title, with the former Southern Area and IBO inter-continental champion taking on current holder Jahmaine Smyle (12-4-2).

Purse bids for the clash between Swindon’s ‘Young Gun’, who also fights Mark Till at the Grange Leisure Centre on June 27, and Leicester’s Smyle, 29, are due in on Wednesday, July 8, and Mayo would relish the chance to host his charge’s scrap for the St George’s strap.

“It was a bit of a surprise but then again it wasn’t a surprise – I know that Kelv’s excited about it,” said Young’s manager.

“It’s against a tough lad but the English and British titles are for the big boys. If you win the Southern Area, then it goes on to the English and British.

“The purse bids are in next month and we’ve got until October for the fight, so time is on our side.

“I’d love to do it in Swindon. We’ll have to see what happens with the purse bids but that would be great for Kelv.”

Meanwhile, fellow Swindon fighter Lawrence Bennett remains on a collision course with Matty Askin for the English cruiserweight belt after the British Boxing Board of Control put their bout back out for purse bids.

Frank Warren originally won the bid to stage ‘Bad Boy’ Bennett’s clash with title-holder Askin this month but the fight was postponed after the Yorkshireman picked up an injury.

Malmesbury’s Joe Hughes looks set to have to wait for his shot at English super-lightweight champion Tommy Martin after no purse bids were accepted for their contest.
