BOXING promoter Keith Mayo admitted that it was a difficult decision to pull the plug on tomorrow night’s New Generation show.

The bill, which was being held at the Grange Drive Community Centre, was supposed to showcase KM Promotions’ latest signings with three boxers making their debuts – Swindon-based 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist Kelly Morgan, Gloucester teenager Akeem Ennis-Brown and Yeovil light-heavyweight Bryn Wain.

However, a shoulder injury to rising welterweight star Ryan Martin saw the original headline act pulled from the show.

But with Kelvin Young added to the card after his Southern Area super-middleweight title eliminator bout was cancelled, Mayo moved the Penhill pugilist to the main event before he withdrew with a foot injury.

And with Morgan still awaiting her licence from the British Boxing Board of Control, Mayo did not want to risk his reputation by staging the show with only three fights.

“I’d tried so many different promoters, people I know like Andy O’Kane and Chris Sanigar to see if I could get another fight,” Mayo said.

“We could have also gone with just three bouts but then you are not giving people value for money and that can do more harm than good.”

The promoter says that he will being staging his next show in Gloucester on September 12, while he is also hoping to put on two events at the Oasis Leisure Centre in October and December.

“I have already booked the Gloucester show,” Mayo said. “I’m also aiming to get down to the Oasis to see if I can arrange two dates in October and December.

“Purse bids for Kelv’s English title shot (against champion Jahmaine Smyle) are due at the start of July and I’ll be submitting one.

“The plan is to have that as the main event on the October show.”

Mayo says that anyone who has bought a ticket for tomorrow’s show will receive a full refund.
