LUKE Watkins and Garvey Kelly are set to return to action in October, according to trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick.

The Swindon duo are back in training at Fitzpatrick’s Gym but they are without their Irish coach as he is in California preparing George Groves for his WBC super-middleweight world title shot against Badou Jack next weekend in Las Vegas and Eamonn O’Kane for his IBF world middleweight title eliminator in October at Madison Square Garden.

Fitzpatrick is hoping to get his rising undefeated cruiserweight star Watkins and welterweight Kelly on Keith Mayo’s show oat the Oasis Leisure Centre on October 24, which will see Ryan Martin facing Faheem Khan for a welterweight challenge title.

“We have a date booked for October 3 at the Oasis Leisure Centre but with being out here with George and Eamonn, I’m very busy,” Fitzpatrick told the Advertiser from his training camp in Big Bear.

“I’m trying to get hold of Keith to see if I can get Duke and Garvey on his show because I think that would make more sense.”

Fitzpatrick, who says that Groves will knock out champion Jack on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s clash with Andre Berto at the MGM Grand, is also hoping to build up a potential clash between Kelly and fellow Swindon welterweight Ryan Martin next summer.

“I think that will be a fantastic fight," said Fitzpatrick, who missed the birth of his son while out in America. “I’m not sure if Ryan has any Irish in him - maybe it could for an Irish title.

“By the time the fight happens, potentially they would have had both 10-11 fights by then. Maybe that could be the main event and we could have Duke on the undercard.

“Or we could have Duke as the main event, fighting for a British title - the aim is to get him up to that level by March-April.”

Before then, Fitzpatrick is looking to bring Watkins out to America to help with the preparations for O’Kane’s clash with Tureano Johnson at the Mecca of boxing on October 17 for the right to be mandatory challenger to face the winner of the main event of the show - Gennady Golovkin v David Lemieux – for the IBF title.

“Right now, they (Watkins and Kelly) are preparing for October, but what a great bit of promotion that could be for the show if they are coming straight from New York to fight in Swindon.”
