PADDY Fitzpatrick is enjoying playing his part in Wiltshire’s boxing renaissance.

The Ferndale Road-based trainer has joined forces with promoter Keith Mayo to put on the Lights Out show at the Oasis Leisure Centre on October 24.

With Trowbridge’s Nick Blackwell the current British middleweight champion, Swindon’s Jamie Cox ranked eighth in the world by the WBO in the super-middleweight division and Lawrence Bennett fighting for the English cruiserweight crown next month, the best of the rest will be on show in Swindon.

Malmesbury’s Joe Hughes will defend his English light-welterweight crown that he won in the summer, Ryan Martin faces Faheem Khan for a welterweight Challenge title and Kelvin Young meets Sam Couzens for a third time for a light-heavyweight Challenge belt.

Rising cruiserweight star Luke Watkins, who is trained by Fitzpatrick, and stablemate Garvey Kelly are both slated to appear at the Oasis, alongside former Walcot and England amateur Danny Bharj.

Swindon-based 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist Kelly Morgan makes her second outing in the paid ranks, while Chippenham’s Ben Heap makes his professional debut and journeyman Joe Beeden gets a rare opportunity to fight on home soil.

“I’m really looking forward to it on October 24, boxing in this town is bumping,” said Fitzpatrick, who heads out to America again next week to guide Eamonn O’Kane in his IBF world title eliminator at Madison Square Garden on October 17.

“Can anyone tell me when it has been busier or better? It hasn’t been. The shows are getting busier and busier and I’m happy to be part of it.”

Tickets are priced £35 unreserved or £60 VIP and are available from any of the fighters on the show or from www.kmpromotions.co.uk.
