CIRENCESTER Amateur Boxing Club got their season off to a flyer at Abertysswg Working Men’s club in Wales. First up for the club was 16-year-old Swindon College student Jordan Wall, facing a much taller opponent from Sugars’ ABC in Ryan Richards. Wall stayed on the back foot, point pinching, hitting and moving throughout the three rounds.

Next up for the club was Johnny McDonagh making his Cirencester debut after transferring from another club and he faced against Pontypool ABC’s Callum Abbruzzese.

McDonagh landed the cleaner punches and, not allowing the Welsh boxer to come forward, won on a unanimous points decision against a boxer that had exactly the same record.

Last up for Cirencester was 11-year-old Lewis Varey against Port Talbot’s Mathew Connor.

The first round saw Varey dictate the pace landing two and three punch combinations, while the Welsh boxer could not find a way to answer the bombardment of punches coming his way.

This was the pattern throughout the bout with Varey winning on a unanimous points decision in what was an excellent schoolboy bout.

Cirencester coach Simon Knowles said: “Jordan did well against a very tall and strong boy. It’s Johnny’s first bout for the club, it’s great to see his hands up and elbows in and boxing well, I believe there is a lot more to come from Johnny. Lewis was out of this world the way he dealt with the Welsh boxer, taking his unbeaten record to six wins.”

Cirencester ABC hold their first show since the club opened nine months ago on November 6 at the Bingham Hall.
