KELLY Morgan is hoping to have the backing of the Swindon netball community when she steps between the ropes next weekend.

The former England international will be making her second outing in the squared circle on the Lights Out show against Hungarian Melinda ‘Angry Bird’ Lazar at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

And while the netball season is in full flow, Morgan is resisting the temptation to return to the court and pursue her dreams of becoming a boxing world champion.

“My team is Raychem, they are my family, a whole lot of them will be there on fight night, they have been so supportive,” said Morgan, who is also a former British javelin record holder and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist.

“I went down to see their first regional match in Bath and it was horrible being sat on the sidelines.

“It was so horrible (just watching), but it is the right decision, I can’t afford to turn my ankles or get injured. It is very frustrating and I do miss it massively but they are with me.”

Instead of staying completely away from netball, Morgan has been coaching the players at Croft as well as a learning disability side called Vixens.

But for now, the 35-year-old is harnessing the power from her javelin days to help her shine in the ring and doesn’t expect many to be able to live with her power.

“The actual movement patterns, from the toes to the shoulders, are similar,” explained Morgan, who won her first fight against Klaudia Vigh in 94 seconds.

“The arm action is different, but everything else is very similar, that pattern of movement is very in-grained.

“That is my advantage I need to use it. The feedback I get from the guys is that I’m very strong and very powerful – that is my javelin throwing arm.

“I know it is powerful, I have been there in a different sport, if they can take the power and take the rounds, then they’ll potentially be the better boxer, but that is the big question, can they last.”

Tickets for the Lights Out are priced £35 unreserved or £60 VIP and are available from Morgan or for more information visit www.kmpromotions.co.uk.
