PADDY Fitzpatrick wants to see Luke Watkins take his time when he faces Tamas Bajzath tonight.

The unbeaten cruiserweight makes his first appearance in the squared circle since February when he appears on the Lights Out show at the Oasis Leisure Centre after a burst ear drum forced him to postpone two fights.

But the Ferndale Road-trainer believes that Duke has not lost too much ground and expects him to be facing one of Britain’s top 10 cruiserweights after his next two fights.

Watkins should prove too strong for his Hungarian opponent this evening as he has lost 15 of his 27 fights – including his last contest against English cruiserweight champion Matty Askin, who stopped inside two round.

“I’d like him (Watkins) to just take his time and get back into the groove,” said Fitzpatrick, who also has Garvey Kelly on the undercard. “I’d like to see him have one or two fights to sharpen up his tools and then we will be looking to fight someone in the top 10.

“I believe I’m blessed with the guys that I train because the mentality of them is excellent.

“Duke understands the game, you never have everything run smooth for you in the pro game.

“You will have an injury you will have illness or something go wrong in camp, you have to deal with it and perform.”

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick is looking forward to seeing Kelly back in action as he returns to the scene of his only professional defeat.

The welterweight was stopped by Faheem Khan in his last fight in Swindon back in February, but bounced back in his following contest to defeat Gabor Feher in Northern Ireland.

“In hindsight, that (loss) did him a favour because I don’t think that he realised that he was over-thinking (against Khan),” said Fitzpatrick.

“Garvey has always had a good skill set, the thing is, does he believe how good his skill set is?

“He responded to what happened excellently, I’m more than happy with him.”
