RYAN Martin clinched his first pro title tonight as he got his hands on the British Classic Challenge welterweight title with a classy victory over Faheem Khan tonight.

Khan, who had already previously tasted victory at the Oasis Leisure Centre when he stopped Martin’s hometown counterpart Garvey Kelly in February this year, was left bamboozled by the 21-year-old’s blistering speed and precision for near-on eight full rounds as the Swindon welterweight sauntered to his first professional strap with an assured and impressive display.

Martin, topping a bill for the first time, was patient and probing in the opening stages but exploded into life with lightning-quick attacks on a number of occasions whilst his caution was matched by Exeter man Khan, who also seemed content to wait for the right opening.

However, Khan seemed unable to contend with Martin’s rapid salvos, which came seemingly without warning time and again.

The visiting fighter attempted to swing the pendulum back in his direction in the third round by upping his intensity but abandoning some of his defensive caution mostly resulted in Martin finding more success with his hook.

The Horseshoe Gym fighter was also impressive in his own defensive efforts, ducking and diving sublimely whenever Khan attempted to find range with his jab.

Khan, 32, retreated back into his shell in the fifth, covering up at every attempt and forcing Martin to go hunting as he stalked his opponent across the canvas.

Trainer Richard Farnan barely had to bark an order in his charge’s direction as Martin took care of business, maintaining his immaculate elusiveness whilst his constant forays forward continued to pay dividends.

There was no change to the narrative in the later rounds, with Martin letting loose and pinning Khan against the ropes late in the eighth before receiving a dominant 80-72 decision from referee Lee Cook.
