WALCOT’S young boxers have been given an additional incentive to shine at their home show this evening – three of their former stars now in the paid ranks watching, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

European WBO super-middleweight champion Jamie Cox, along with unbeaten professionals Ryan Martin and Danny Bharj, will present the trophies when their old club stages a 16-bout boxing show this evening at the Supermarine Sports and Social Club, South Marston.

Cox is the most decorated boxer in the club’s history, winning the 2006 Commonwealth Games Gold medal, the 2005 Senior ABA title and a host of England vests.

Martin and Bharj were both England Internationals at junior level, and both won numerous titles for the central Swindon club.

Walcot chief coach Harry Scott said: “It is great news that these three are returning for our show. I have followed their professional career with interest and I’m very happy that all are doing well. Let’s hope we have some future stars in tonight’s show.’’ Topping the bill is 24-year-old welterweight Said Salem, who has a points win over Swindon pro Garvey Kelly on his CV, and will be looking to get his career back on track after a ring absence of 18 months.

Door open at 7pm and the action will start from 7.45pm onwards.

  • CIRENCESTER ABC travelled to Wales to a show hosted by Cwmbran ABC, where 14-year-old Tommy Varey was up against Sam Dockree.

Varey landed the cleaner shots, easily winning the first two rounds. The third was more even, but the Welsh boxer was awarded the split decision.

Ciren’s first home show is on November 6 at Bingham Hall. For tickets, call either Billy Varey (07453 545684), Tommy Varey (07534 522770) or Simon Knowles on (07551 884928).
