JAMIE Cox says that there is no doubt in his mind that he will become a world super-middleweight champion next year.

The Swindon southpaw wasted little time in defending his WBO European title on Saturday as he halted Hungarian Ferenc Albert in 68 seconds at the National Stadium in Dublin.

A devastating performance by the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist saw Box Nation commentator Barrie Jones dub Cox the UK’s Gennady Golovkin – the world’s number one-ranked middleweight - following the right hook that left Albert on the canvas and veteran referee Mickey Vann abandoning his count.

The display from the 29-year-old, who has now had three first-round stoppages in 2015, was his most chilling and sends out a warning to the rest of the 168lb division.

The win is likely to move Cox into the top three within the WBO and the former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion could be in line for a shot at WBA champion Fedor Chudinov.

“We will get that world title in 2016,” Cox told the Advertiser. “(Cox’s promoter) Frank (Warren) is working hard at getting me that shot.

“(WBO champion) Arthur Abraham is fighting Martin Murray and then the winner must face (Gilberto) Ramirez.

“Frank is very close with Chudinov’s manager so that could be on the cards next.

“I have got a small team and I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing with Des (Witter) my strength and conditioning coach and John Costello my boxing coach.

“We are going to keep it simple and keep moving towards that world title.”

The win for Cox means that while he is gaining a reputation as a devastating knock-out artist, it also means many managers and promoters will not want to put their fighters in with such a dangerous man.

“It is good that we are getting this reputation, it is flattering that there is this fear to fight me,” Cox added.

“But it is also bad because managers and promoters are refusing to put their fighters in the ring with me.

“Frank has offered so many people the chance to fight me but they all turned it down.

“The only way I’m going to get these top fights is if I’m mandatory and that is what we will keep working towards.”

Having quickly dispatched of Albert on Saturday night, Cox was able to see Callum Smith blast Rocky Fielding away in less than a round in Liverpool to become the new British super-middleweight champion and the former Walcot and England amateur says he would have no problem in facing either man.

“Fair play it was good fight,” Cox said. “If they want to put the money up, let’s have a Frank Warren versus Eddie Hearn fight – I know that I can beat all of Eddie Hearn’s super-middleweights.”
