CIRENCESTER ABC hosted their first show at the Bingham Hall, where five of their boxers were in action in a 16-bout show.

Cirencester’s Martin Jones got the show underway in a skills bout with Owain Holloway, from Arthurs ABC, giving a good account of himself in all three rounds and looking a good prospect.

Bristol Box Cup champion Lewis Varey was up against the experienced Welsh Novice champion Dylan John, from Arthurs ABC.

From the bell, Varey started to box well, landing good left and right-hand punches, moving well, and not allowing the strong 12-year-old Welsh boxer to land his punches to win a unanimous points decision.

Next up was Western Counties champion Johnny Varey against the more experienced Kieron Woods, from Chepstow ABC.

Varey, the smallest of the two, made his mark from the start, landing his three and four-punch combinations and eventually winning on a majority points decision.

Western Counties champion Raymond Jones, from Cirencester, took on Kalib Appleton, from Slough ABC, in an all-action bout.

Both showed good boxing skills in the first round, Jones upping the pressure in the second with two and three-punch combinations, despite Appleton battling back gamely.

The third round saw Jones land solid right-hand left-hook combinations, forcing his Slough opponent to take a standing count.

With seconds to go, Jones piled on the pressure to the final bell to win the decision, also clinching the best home boxer of the night trophy, picked by Malmesbury’s English champion light-welterweight boxer Joe Hughes.

Last up was Ciren’s Western Counties champion Thomas Varey against Ferndown’s Dane Smith.

Varey seemed to do enough to take the first round but the second round saw the tempo rise as both fighters tried to outbox each other, Varey landing straight left and right-hand punches to win on a points decision.

Cirencester coach Simon Knowles said: “To have 16 entertaining bouts and four of our home boys all getting the win in front of a nearly full house was great.

“Lewis boxed a boy that was nearly a year older and had more experience. It was his best win for me and extends his unbeaten record to seven.

“Johnny always gives 100 per cent in the ring and I thought he boxed brilliantly. His opponent has had 20 bouts, so it makes his win even sweeter.

"Raymond is a very strong boy and boxing superbly and will go a long way in boxing.’’

Western Counties champion Jordan Wall saw his opponent pull out on the morning of the show.
