LAWRENCE Bennett will discover today who will be staging his ill-tempered English cruiserweight title rematch with Matty Askin.

The self-styled Bad Boy faced the reigning champion from Blackpool back in October at the York Hall in London in a bout that ended controversy when the two men fell through the ropes and on to the floor.

Bennett returned to the ring, while Askin was taken away on a stretcher and the fight was called a technical draw.

In the aftermath of the contest, there were angry scenes with two of Askin’s supporters gaining access to the ring in a bid to attack Bennett.

The Swindon southpaw was also subjected to racial abuse.

Last month the British Boxing Board of Control called the fight to be re-staged calling for purse bids to be in by yesterday with the bout to take place by the end of March.

Bennett’s promoter Steve Goodwin, who staged the original contest, was set to make an offer to put the fight on again in London.

Askin’s team were also expecting to make an offer with the hope of staging the bout in Blackpool.

However, if Askin, who fights on Saturday night in a non-title contest, and his team win the purse bids and take the fight north, Bennett says that he will be lobbying for certain conditions to be met.

Bennett told the Adver when purse bids were called for that he would want assurances over his personal safety and that he would not be subjected to racial abuse if he had to travel to Blackpool.
