GARVEY Kelly says that he got complacent with his training as he suffered the second loss of his professional career.

The Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained welterweight was out-pointed 39-37 by Lee Connolly at the Grange Drive Leisure Centre on Sunday.

And the 27-year-old says that he has to work harder in the gym if he is to succeed in the ring.

“Firstly, the better man won and deserved to get the win,” Kelly told the Advertiser.

“I know that I can perform better than I did - I just have to get back in the gym and work harder than what I have been.

“My time-keeping and my diet throughout wasn’t great, and that is something that I have to change.

“I can’t eat the food that I have been and then expect to perform like an athlete.

“I also can’t keep having late nights and not getting the rest that my body needs.

“I’m going to get back to the gym and do what my coach tells me to do.”

But there was better news for Kelly’s stablemate Sam Smith as he claimed a 39-37 points win over Mark Till.

Fitzpatrick was pleased with how the former England amateur performed on his debut after getting over the early nerves.

“In the changing room, Sniper (Smith) was nice and loose but I think it all dawned on him that this was his pro debut,” Fitzpatrick said.

“He was quite tight in the first round and once that was over with, he relaxed again and got the better shots off.”

Richard Farnan says that he will be having a sit-down with his middleweight Ben Heap after he suffered a debut defeat.

The former kickboxing champion from Chippenham lost to Wolverhampton-based Latvian Viktors Drizlionoks via a 39-37 decision.

“Ben and I need to sit down,” Farnan said. “Ben is very fit but he needs to be doing boxing-specific training when he is not with me.

“You could see, after the second round, he was spent and had very few ideas.

“I know that it is difficult for him because he is not based in Swindon and has a young family.

“He will bounce back but we need to be stricter on his training.”

Meanwhile, Gloucester’s Akeem Ennis Brown made it three wins from three with a routine four-round shutout win over Fonz Alexander.
