LAWRENCE Bennett will be treating tomorrow just like any other day as he prepares for his television debut.

The Bad Boy has now been given a date and venue for his eagerly-anticipated English cruiserweight title rematch with Matty Askin.

With the reigning champion’s promoter, Frank Warren, winning the purse bids earlier this month, the 33-year-old has been told that he will face Askin at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on the undercard of Terry Flanagan’s WBO world lightweight title defence against Derry Mathews, live on Box Nation.

And while many people will be celebrating tomorrow as Christmas Day, Swindon’s Bennett has other ideas.

“I’m going to be in the gym,” he told the Advertiser. “I’m going to be putting the hard work in to give me that extra edge.

“I have got my bag work and some strength and conditioning to do.

“Now I have got a date to work toward I’ve already got an extra edge and having that date set in stone means that you can focus and count the days down.”

Bennett, who vacated his Southern Area belt to focus on his English title bid, and Askin saw their first match end in controversy when the pair fell through the ropes and on to the floor of the York Hall.

The Blackpool fighter was taken away on a stretcher, while Bennett returned to the ring before the result was declared a technical draw.

However, Bennett was also subjected to racial abuse and two of Askin’s supporters gained access to the ring in a bid to get to the Bad Boy.

The 33-year-old is now looking forward to the rematch and being on such a big stage.

“These are the kind of nights that I got into boxing for,” said Bennett, who will be joined by fellow Swindonian Jamie Cox on the bill.

“Fighting for an English title on the undercard of a world title fight on television.

“This time last year I was preparing to defend my Southern Area belt, it is crazy how it has been.

“When the purse bid was announced I knew that it would probably be February and because of that I had to turn down the chance to fight on the David Haye undercard as you are not allowed to fight 30 days before.”
