JAMIE Cox is hoping that promoter Frank Warren can keep delivering the goods in 2016 after a knockout 12 months.

The reigning WBO European super-middleweight champion had three fights in 2015 and all of them failed to go past the first round as the 29-year-old introduced himself to the 12 stone division with a bang.

After a 20-month hiatus from the squared circle, the Swindon southpaw returned in February and wasted little time in dispatching Alistair Warren at the Wolverhampton Civic in two-and-a-half minutes.

Cox, while struggling to find someone man enough to take him on, headed to the States for some high quality sparring in the spring.

And although the former 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist was deemed ‘too big’ to spar with Floyd Mayweather ahead of his mega-bout with Manny Pacquiao, Cox moved on to San Diego where he worked with Canelo Alvarez.

On his return from America, Cox signed a new promotional agreement with Warren and in July the former Walcot and England star was handed a shot at the WBO European title where he faced Spain’s Blas Miguel Martinez.

With Alistair Warren gone in 150 seconds, the Spaniard lasted 16 seconds less as Cox added to the Commonwealth light-middleweight crown he won in 2011.

With a world ranking of eight now under his belt with the WBO, Cox headed out to Dublin for his third fight of the year where Ferenc Albert stepped up to the sacrificial plate.

If people thought that Cox was devastating in his previous two outings, they were in for a shock as the Hungarian was left lying on the canvas for a second and final time after just 68 seconds.

And as he hopes for sterner tests in 2016, the unbeaten Cox was already in camp prior to Christmas for his next scheduled outing on February 13 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

“I’m not sure if I’ll be defending my belt, I think I’ll be fighting for another title,” Cox told the Advertiser.

“Frank is trying to get me made mandatory for the British title, if that happens we will see if Callum Smith is man enough to step up or vacate.

“He is just another rival in the super-middleweight division and I’m already in the gym working hard for my next fight.

“Whoever it is they are going to get the same treatment I have dished out in 2015.

“Christmas is a great time for me as I get to spend a bit of time with the family.

“I don’t have to worry about the food either.

“I was eating pretty well at 11 stone six and now we are in the 12 stone division.”

But while the potential is there for a British title shot, Cox’s promoter Warren told the Advertiser that he is also looking at securing a dream world title fight for the Swindonian over the next 12 months.

Since defending his title in November, Cox has moved up the rankings to number four with the WBO, where Germany’s Arthur Abraham is the reigning champion, and the Swindonian is now ranked 13 with the WBA.

“I’m still a work in progress, and that will continue as I look to reach my goal of being a world champion,” he said.

“Frank said he is looking at getting a world title shot in 2016, so all the super-middleweights better be aware – I’m coming for them.”
