KELLY Morgan says she has been blown away after the World Boxing Council (WBC) put her one fight away from fighting for a world title.

The prestigious WBC green belt is one of the highest regarded belts in the sport and now Swindon’s 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist is within in touching distance of achieving her dream of becoming a world champion.

After being contacted by the Women’s International Boxing Association, a governing body which is currently not recognised by the British Boxing Board of Control, to offer her the chance to fight for their world title, Morgan’s trainer Richard Farnan approached the WBC to discover where she is ranked within the organisation.

“When they emailed back - to cut a long story short - the WBC said that I could fight for their Silver middleweight belt in the UK in my next fight,” said Morgan, who beat the WBC world number four Szilvia Szabados in her last fight.

“The Silver belt is the one directly below the main one and if I win that, then I would become mandatory for the world title.

“It is insane. The WBC is the biggest boxing council in the world and they are really getting behind me – I’m blown away.

“I have spoken to my manager Keith Mayo and he is now trying to put something together to help make this happen.

“I feel so honoured, excited and privileged to be given this opportunity.”

Swindon’s Morgan, who only made her professional debut last year, is now looking to head out to the WBC’s Female Convention event in Mexico, which runs from January 27-30.

The former England netball international has set-up a crowdfunding page on JustGiving in a bid to help fund the trip to central America.
