KELLY Morgan will have her name up lights after being told that her WBC Silver middleweight title will be the headline act at the Oasis Leisure Centre on March 12.

The 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist’s bid to become mandatory for the world crown is to be the star attraction of KM Promotions and Paddy Fitzpatrick’s next show.

Morgan was given the news that she would be the main event on the eve of jetting out to Mexico today to attend the WBC Female Convention alongside trainer Richard Farnan.

And while the former England netball international is excited by the news, Morgan admits that she is feeling a few nerves at present.

“At the moment, I’m feeling a little bit queasy, I know how important this all is; not just for me but for women in sport,” Morgan told the Adver.

“I got told on Monday morning that my fight was going to be the main event – I can’t believe it.

“But give me 48 hours, then I will have got my head around it and digested it all.

“To be a female headlining a show, fighting for a WBC title and being able to have it in my hometown, is amazing.

“I’m getting quite a bit of attention now. I experienced a little of it during my athletics days, but this is unique.

“We have seen the amateurs get the publicity, but for a female professional boxer to receive this attention is fantastic.”

Morgan, who is likely to be facing Georgian Elene Sikmashvili in March, raised £2,000 to fund her trip to Mexico from donations via a crowdfunding page on JustGiving.

“My friend, Sam Cullis, who looks after a lot of my sponsorship, set up the page and I begrudgingly accepted,” Morgan said.

“I didn’t think that we would raise the money, but we did it in three days – I’m still blown away.

“I’m looking forward to getting out to Mexico and meeting all the other boxers, promoters and managers and to start building relationships with them.

“If I can win the Silver title, then the WBC will make me mandatory for the vacant world title.

“This is such a big step for me. I know that I keep saying it doesn’t get any bigger than this, but it does, doesn’t it? If I can do this, then I will be fighting for a world title.”
