KELLY Morgan has spoken of her relief after having her opponent named for her WBC Silver middleweight title shot.

The 35-year-old is set to face Ghanaian number one Gifty Amanua Ankrah when she tops the bill at the Oasis Leisure Centre on Saturday, March 12.

Ankrah, who faced reigning WBC super-middleweight champion Nikki Adler for the WIBA strap in 2014, has won four of her nine bouts in the 12-stone division, three of those coming against boxers on debut, and is stepping down a weight to face the Swindon boxer on her own patch.

While Morgan has not looked at video of her opponent yet, her trainer, Richard Farnan, is already developing a game plan to ensure the former Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist clinches her first title in just her fourth bout.

“It is brilliant news on all fronts,” said Morgan, after hearing of her opponent.

“There is always that element of concern that an opponent isn’t going to come through.

“Training is training and it is always 100 per cent, but you always have that background anxiety.

“From the other side of the coin, there is the aspect of ticket sales. I am always trying to promote the show and I have always got that background worry that I am going to have to pull out on everybody.

“It is great to have a name. We can start looking into her boxing style and we can tailor sessions to meet what we are going to potentially face in the ring.

“I haven’t looked at her yet but Rich has managed to get some footage and watch that.

“We’re going to try and find more footage but, from what he has seen, we have already started to think about game plans and tactics.

“I know what boxing is like and the opponents change and you have to be prepared for that, but it is good to know.”

Morgan is not expecting a walk in the park when she faces Ankrah, the Ghanaian going the distance in five of her nine fights, but thinks they have already found weaknesses that they can exploit.

“She is tough, that is the main thing,” added Morgan.

“I have been told that the African boxers are very durable and it would appear that she is no different.

“She is going to come to fight and she is going to be able to take a shot or two.

“Other than that, there are some things that Richard has picked up on straight away from the video and hopefully we can find some other footage - it will confirm or deny that.

“From what he has seen, he already has quite strong thoughts on how we are going to approach it.”
