JOHN Costello insists he will not rest until Jamie Cox's name is cleared.

The 28-year-old WBO European super-middleweight champion was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison for assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend Viktoria Gribovskaja, 20 weeks for violence to secure entry and 12 weeks for criminal damage, to run concurrently, on Monday, after being convicted of all charges last month at Croydon Magistrates'.

However, the Swindon southpaw’s trainer said that Cox's legal team have already lodged an appeal against the conviction and hope to have the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist home within four weeks.

“Once this goes to crown court, we are confident we will clear Jamie’s name,” Costello told the Advertiser.

“We will not rest until his name is clear – there was no assault and once this goes to an appeal, we will get this all sorted.”

Despite feeling that the judgement would go against Cox, Costello never believed that the former Walcot and England amateur would be handed a custodial sentence.

With a final eliminator for the WBO world title scheduled for the former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion by his promoter Frank Warren, the Birmingham-based trainer is hopeful that will still be the case upon his release from prison.

“I have been married 22 years and the thought of putting hands on the mother of my children sickens me,” Costello said.

“Jamie lives with me Monday to Friday and I know that what they said he’d done is impossible.

“Yes, they have got the recording of the 999 call (where Cox is heard telling Gribovskaja ‘I’ll knock you spark out’) and Jamie admits that he let himself down there.

“At the moment, his career is on hold and hopefully he will be able to train while in prison.

“Once we have cleared his name, the (British Boxing) Board (of Control) will have to reinstate his licence.

“Jamie is ranked number four in the world by the WBO and has got a final eliminator for the world title.

“Once we get Jamie home, hopefully in the next three or four weeks, we can start looking at that again.”

Costello said that Cox gave him a nod when he was taken away after sentencing.

“Jamie was fine when they took him away,” the trainer said. “He looked at me and nodded.

“His mum Belinda was very upset, as you can imagine.”
