KELLY Morgan will return to the scene of her greatest triumph as she looks to take a giant step to becoming a world champion.

The 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze-medallist will face Gifty Ankrah for the WBC Silver middleweight title at Grange Drive Leisure Centre on Friday, June 10 – just six months after she defeated Szilvia Szabados to become the number two in the world with the WIBA.

The former England international netball player is headlining Neilson Boxing’s first professional show – New Beginning – and should she defeat the Ghanaian, Morgan will become the number one contender to face new WBC world champion Kali Reis.

The 35-year-old, who has won all three of her professional bouts, was originally set to face Ankrah in March at the Oasis Leisure Centre, only for the show to be cancelled at the 11th hour.

“It was so important to get this fight on for Kelly,” said Mark Neilson, who is also hoping to stage professional boxing shows on the ice rink at the Link Centre in future. “We wanted to keep the momentum going.

“The WBC are happy to sanction the fight, but if it had gone on any longer, then maybe Gifty could have fought someone else or either fighter could have got injured.

“The visa application for Gifty is going through at the moment.”

Morgan will be joined on the show by stable-mate Ryan Martin and he will face rugged journeyman Arvydas Trinzo in a six-round contest.

The unbeaten 22-year-old has not fought since October when he picked up his first title by defeating Faheem Khan for the British Challenge crown.

Former jockey Jack Budge, who made a successful debut at the weekend, will also be fighting on the bill alongside light-heavyweight Ross Alexander, the former Swindon white-collar fighter faces Bryn Wain, as well as Tewkesbury’s Adam Harper and Plymouth’s Darren Townley.

Tickets for the New Beginning show will be priced £35 standard or £60 Ringside and are available by calling 01793 833468 or by visiting www.iboxingtickets.com
