CIRENCESTER ABC tasted ring success at the pre-quarter finals of the Minor and Schoolboy Championships in Bodmin.

Western Counties champion Lewis Varey took on southern area champion Todd Carty, from Small Holdings ABC, in the 44-46kg weight category and won a points decision to reach the quarter finals in Ipswich this weekend.

Next up was 11 year old Western Counties champion Sammy Varey against Danny Boardman from Mole Valley ABC in the 30-32kg category.

Boardman came into the ring with a record of eight wins out of nine to Varey's three bouts, but the Ciren youngster boxed well despite losing a points decision.

Fourteen year old Western Counties champion Johnny Varey recieved a bye as his opponent was pulled out, but took a bout against Mark Meadon, from Bodmin ABC, taking all three rounds and winning a unanimous points decision.

At Exmouth, Cirencester's Thomas Varey, 15, was against the highly-rated Dave Lewis, from Oakmead ABC and earned a unanimous points decision.

Cirencester coach Simon Knowles said: "What a great season it's been for all the boxers and coaches, we have now got nine Western Counties champions.

"Johnny Varey and Thomas Varey have both won two years in a row and we have Lewis Varey, Raymond Jones, Jordan Wall, Sammy Varey, Jimmy McDonagh, Johnny McDonagh and Mikey McDonagh all winning their titles.''

Cirencester had travelled to Bristol last Friday to a show hosted by Broad Plain ABC.

First up to represent the club was 12 year old Martin Jones against Lewis Taylor from the host club, with Jones winning on a unanimous points decision.

Eleven year old Sammy Harris, up against Tyler Mutch, from Bulmershe ABC, lost out on a split decision.

Making his ring debut for the Cirencester club was 16 year old Ethan Frayling, against Jay Clarke from Bulmershe ABC, Frayling triumphing on a points decision.

Thirteen year old Danny Varey and 11 year old Jason Frayling both had skills bouts.

Cirencester ABC travel to Merlin Bridge in Wales on Friday with three boxers in action before the Minor and Schoolboy Championships in Ipswich on Saturday.
