WALCOT ABC’s Alex Masters brought the curtain down on a busy boxing season with an impressive victory at the Barton Hill ABC event in Bristol last Saturday, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

The 12-year-old encountered Bobby O’Donoghue from the host club over three one-and-a-half minute rounds.

Cheered on by his home support, O’Donoghue attacked from the outset, which Masters blocked and then countered with jabs of his own, in a close opening round.

The start of the middle session saw the Swindon fighter launch a heavy two–fisted attack, scoring with a left hook-straight right combination.

This shook up the Bristolian, who kept on the back foot for most of the remainder of the round.

Both boxers gave their all for the final 90 seconds and at the final bell, the ringside judges awarded Masters a unanimous points decision.

Earlier, Brandon Barnes had put up a brave display on debut against Zain Ahmed from the host club.

The 14-year-old old never stopped trying to score with southpaw jabs and straight lefts, but was narrowly outpointed in a terrific tussle.

Walcot chief coach Harry Scott said: “Both lads put in 100 per cent effort and as coaches, that’s all we can ask for.

“Alex gave his best performance in a Walcot vest, and I am very pleased with him. Brandon did his best and will have learnt a lot from his debut.”
