THERE was disappointment for Cirencester ABC’s Lewis Varey at the national schoolboy championships as he was beaten by Harry Smith, from Pinewood Star ABC, in the semi-finals at Milton Keynes.

There was nothing to choose between the two boys during the bout but Smith was awarded the points decision.

ABA coach Simon Knowles said: “Lewis was unlucky. Even though there was not a lot between the boys, I thought he had just nicked it but the decision went the other way, but that’s the way it goes.”

Cirencester are due to travel to Bristol for the Bristol Box Cup held over two days this weekend, with three of their fighters in action.

Lewis Varey, Sammy Varey and Billy Harris are all competing against opponents from Ireland, England and Wales.

Coach Knowles added: “We are all looking forward to this weekend at the Bristol Box Cup and then we finish the season and get a well-deserved break for all the coaches and the boxers.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to the Nelson Inn pub for allowing us to use their premises. We all very much appreciate what they have done for us.’’
