LUKE Watkins says that he didn’t have to think too hard about fighting on Friday night.

The unbeaten cruiserweight was added to Neilson Boxing’s first professional show, New Beginning, last Thursday.

The 26-year-old will be in a six-round contest against Latvian Reinis Porozovs on the undercard of Kelly Morgan’s WBC Silver middleweight title fight against Lisa Cielas.

The Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained fighter, who has won all seven of his bouts to date, will go into Friday’s clash on the back of a points win over Tony Cruise at the York Hall in May.

“We didn’t have to think too hard about it. Paddy is my coach and tells me what to do and advises me – this was quite an easy decision,” said Watkins.

“If I hadn’t taken this fight and for some strange reason I wasn’t able to box in July then it would have been a missed opportunity for me.”

Watkins says that he is hoping that he can put on a show in front of his hometown crowd when he returns to the Grange Drive Leisure Centre six months after stopping Sandor Balogh.

“I want to put on a show on Friday night because you can’t beat fighting in front of your home crowd and it was six months since I last did that,” Watkins added.

“I’m in a heavier division and that brings power so let’s see the power on Friday.”

Trainer Fitzpatrick says Watkins must be on his guard against Porozovs who is looking for his third successive scalp in the UK.

The 26-year-old out-pointed Maltese heavyweight Billy Corito in February, before stopping previously-unbeaten Oxfordshire-based Polish cruiserweight Dariusz Skop.

“This guy is coming after two wins in the UK and we don’t want Duke being number three,'' Fitzpatrick said.
