CIRENCESTER Amateur Boxing Club finished their season off in tremendous style, with Lewis Varey winning gold for a second year in a row at the Bristol Box Cup.

Facing an opponent from St Johns in Ireland, Peter Convery, it proved one of the best bouts of the weekend.

The first round saw Convery come flying out of the traps but Varey held his own, catching his opponent with combination punches as he stepped in.

The pressure did not stop in a highly entertaining bout, with Varey winning on a points decision.

Sammy Varey was unlucky not to get the decision in his contest against Leo Lecourt, from Repton ABC.

Despite being ill all week, the Ciren fighter was determined to box, giving a fine account of himself but losing the decision despite the Cirencester camp thinking that he had done enough to win.

Billy Harris lost on a unanimous points decision against Mark Cooper, also from Repton ABC.

Cirencester ABA coach Simon Knowles said: “What a great weekend for the club. Lewis put in a great performance against a top boy from Ireland with 11 wins and two losses.

“I was going to pull Sammy out as he hadn’t been well, but he desperately wanted to box, so we let him go. We thought he did enough to win. We are so proud of him - he gave his all, while Billy was beaten by a better boy.”

Sammy Varey and Harris’ opponents went on to take gold in the finals.
