RYAN Martin showed no signs of ring rust as he added a seventh win to his unblemished record with a 60-54 win over Lithuanian Arvydas Trizno at Grange Leisure Centre on Friday night.

The 22-year-old was on the undercard of Kelly Morgan’s WBC Silver title shot and had been out of the ring for eight months after his last fight was cancelled.

Despite this, he performed well, putting together a steady, methodical and controlled performance.

The first half of his fight was a close affair, both fighters looking to exploit their opponent when they could, but neither able to land many clean shots.

In the second half, Martin became more dominant, the Swindon boxer following his opponent around the ring and leaving him clearly hurt from some explosive body shots.

A victorious Martin said: “(I was) happy to get the ring rust off with a good performance.

“Obviously, eight months out the ring; you’re always going to worry about how sharp you’re going to be and how fit you’re going to be. I felt really good in there.”

Trizno was a highly experienced opponent but the contest provided few surprises for the Swindon man.

“I knew he was going to be tough and durable. I’m hitting hard at the minute but I sort of expected to go the distance,’’ added Martin.

“I hurt him a few times but he’s a clever fighter. He’s been in the ring 70 times. He knows how to stay in there. He had a hard head.”

Aside from his own performance, Martin also acknowledged the achievement of stablemate Morgan, expressing his pride at being on her undercard.

“I was massively proud. Her fighting for a WBC (title) is obviously a huge achievement in her fourth fight but we put the work in day in, day out.

“I know how hard she works, so she deserves it just as much as anyone else does. I was proud.” added Martin, who was planning to be back in the gym this morning as he prepares for his next challenge.
