BOXING promoters Mark and Tony Neilson have hailed Friday's 'New Beginning' show as a huge success after seeing Kelly Morgan, Ryan Martin and Luke Watkins all maintain their perfect records.

The show at Grange Leisure Centre was a step into the unknown for Neilson, his brother Tony and dad Eddie, as it was their first pro event.

Mark said: “It was brilliant. (We’re) absolutely delighted. (It was) great with the results going our way; Kelly having her hand raised and winning the (WBC Silver middleweight) belt, a great undercard, and a full house ,which is more than you can ask for.”

Morgan won the vacant WBC Silver title when she beat Lisa Cielas with a unanimous decision from the judges.

The Neilsons now plans to take a few days off before arranging his next fight night, currently scheduled for September 17 at the Oasis Leisure Centre, and hinted towards appearances for Morgan, welterweight Martin, who beat Lithuanian Arvydas Trizno on Friday night, and Watkins, who climbed off the canvas to stop Reinis Porozovs.

He said: “I think you could see similar faces. Perhaps Ryan Martin, Luke Watkins and Kelly Morgan maybe making a defence (of her title).

“It will be a full card, with local fighters - a couple from Friday and perhaps a few new faces as well.”

Neilson also highlighted the importance of including local boxers, stressing they add an extra dimension to the shows.

He added: “It’s important to have local people (fighting on the show). We have some good local professionals and it just adds to it.

“If you have a card full of boxers from other areas, it might be a good night of boxing but you won’t get the same atmosphere.”

Neilson believes boxing is enjoying a resurgence of late - the country currently holds 13 world champions - and believes that Swindon is becoming a focal point for the South West.

“I think it has been going on the way up for about the last two years. Boxing nationally and internationally is going through a bit of a renaissance. The 2012 Olympics was a starting point and it’s just carried on,’’ he added.

“Swindon is a boxing hub now for the South West at all levels – amateur and professional – there are lots of shows and lots of platforms.

“We are lucky to have so many good professionals active at the same time.”
