LUKE Watkins makes a swift return to the ring on Saturday night when he faces Dmitrij Kalinovskij at the York Hall.

The rising unbeaten cruiserweight prospect was in action just last month as he climbed off the canvas at the Grange Drive Leisure Centre to stop Reinis Porozovs.

However, the Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained boxer, nicknamed ‘The Duke’, should have little problem this weekend as his Lithuanian opponent, who goes by the moniker of ‘Rambo’, has not won in the last two years.

The 24-year-old, who has lost 22 of his 33 fights to date, made his debut in the paid ranks back in 2010 as a welterweight against Aryvdas Trinzo, who suffered a points defeat to Swindon’s unbeaten 147lb fighter Ryan Martin last month.

Kalinovskij, who has also fought a debuting Eamonn O’Kane, has come up through the weights and tipped the scales over the cruiserweight 200lb limit last year.

While Watkins knows that there will be bigger tests to come than the one on Saturday night, where his six-round contest will be the final one of a 19-fight show which includes Penhill’s Kelvin Young’s bid to become the Southern Area light-heavyweight champion when he faces Jack Morris, he won't be taking it lightly.

“There is no point looking too much into it - the test, will be the test. The main thing is improving on the last time," said the 26-year-old.

“The camp has gone well and now I’m ready for the fight.”

Also on the mammoth show will be cruiserweight rival Wadi Camacho as he defends his Southern Area title against Danny Couzens.

“I won’t get to see that as I’ll be out the back warming up,” Watkins said. “Is a fight against him on the cards? Who knows – you never know what he is going to be doing next.

“There is no particular route I’m looking to take, whether it is the Southern Area, Irish title (Watkins was scheduled to fight for that belt last year before a burst ear drum ruled him out), international or inter-continental titles – we are looking at all options.”

As well as Watkins and Young on the bill, the Duke’s stable-mate Sam Smith faces David Sipos in a four-round light-heavyweight contest.

Meanwhile, Swindon-based Moroccan heavyweight Noureddine Meddoun returns to the ring for the first time in more than four years, after being stopped by former world title challenger Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson, to open the show against Poland’s Kamil Sokolowski.
