BOXING promoter Mark Neilson is describing the negotiations between Kelvin Young and Sam Smith as ‘Swindon’s version of Carl Frampton-Scott Quigg.’

While Smith, who is trained by Paddy Fitzpatrick claims that if the contract is not signed by 9am tomorrow morning the fight is off, Neilson has told the Advertiser he expects the match-up to come to fruition and headline the Neilson Boxing show, in conjunction with Eamonn O’Kane’s King Kane Promotions, on November 26 at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

“We are nearly there,” Neilson said. “It is just about dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.

“It is like Swindon’s version of Frampton-Quigg where you have got to sort out who is in what dressing room, who comes out first stuff like.

“You got these two egos, but that is not a problem for us – in fact it is quite entertaining.”

Light-heavyweight prospect Smith, who has won all three of his professional contests to date, took to Facebook this morning to give former IBO inter-continental super-middleweight champion Young a deadline to get the deal done.

He wrote: “There seems to be a problem with Kelvin Young putting pen to paper to fight me even though he repeatedly expresses that he wants to.

“He now has until tomorrow morning, Friday the 29th at 9am to have the paperwork signed and in the hands of Paddy Fitzpatrick or I will be moving on to another top 20 UK fighter.

“I wanted to give Kelvin the opportunity to have one last chance to headline in front of his home fans but if he just can't bring himself to accepting my gift for whatever reason then so be it.”

However, Neilson says that he expects the deal to be done.

“All we are focusing on is a Sam Smith-Kelvin Young main event,” the promoter said.

“Sam Smith wants the fight and we have spoken to Kelvin and there all only two fights he wants in Swindon.

“There is this one with Sam Smith and he wants his trilogy with Sam Couzens, he doesn’t want the pressure of having to sell tickets to fight an eight-rounder against a plumber from God knows where.”

Joining Smith and Young on the six-fight bill in November will be unbeaten Luke Watkins, who is also slated to fight at the York Hall on September 17, as he looks to continue his raise up the UK cruiserweight rankings.
