KELVIN Young says that he is ‘gutted’ that he won’t be able to have his swansong in his hometown.

The 29-year-old former IBO inter-continental super-middleweight champion was set to step through the ropes for the last time next Saturday at the Neilson Boxing, in association with King Kane Promotions, ‘Talk Is Cheap’ show at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

However, Neilson Boxing announced yesterday that they have had to cancel the show ‘due to circumstances beyond our control’.

In a statement on Facebook, the promoters also said: “We have been working tirelessly behind the scenes with all relevant stakeholders to try and save the show but unfortunately, this couldn’t be done.

“All purchased tickets will be refunded in full from the point of purchase.”

The show was due to see Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained light-heavyweight prospect Sam Smith top the bill in only his fourth fight, while stablemates Luke Watkins, Harry Webb and Ryan Martin were also set to appear.

However, for Young, this show was going to be his goodbye and following the cancellation of the bill, the former Southern Area champion is still looking for another fight before his British Boxing Board of Control licence expires next month.

“I’m pretty gutted (that the show has been cancelled),” Young told the Advertiser.

“This was going to be my last fight.

“Not to be able to have my last fight in my hometown is gutting.

“I brought championship boxing back to Swindon. I fought for, won and defended the IBO inter-continental title and also the Southern Area title.

“I’ve had some great nights at the Oasis and it’s disappointing that it can’t end there.

“At the moment, there are a couple of options that are on the table, I just have to speak to Keith (Mayo, Young’s manager) about them.

“My licence runs out in mid-to-late December, so I’m looking to get something sorted pretty quickly.”
