KELVIN Young is looking to put on a show tonight as he fights on the undercard of Billy Joe Saunders’ WBO world middleweight title defence.

The 29-year-old, who is calling time on his career at the end of the month, takes on fish monger-turned-professional boxer Tommy Philbin at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley, with the bout likely to be shown live on BoxNation.

However, the Keith Mayo-managed boxer is hoping that this won’t be the last time he steps through the ropes before his licence expires at the end of the month.

The former IBO super-middleweight inter-continental champion has been stopped in his last two bouts, a 10th round technical knockout against Jack Morris in July followed by a second round TKO against David Brophy in October.

Both those losses carried an automatic 28-day suspension for Young and that is something that the ex-Southern Area champion is looking to avoid this time around.

“I shouldn’t have been stopped against Jack Morris, but against David Brophy I was beaten by the better man,” Young said.

“All I’m thinking about is this fight. I have come up here to put on a show.

“I’m in the away corner, so I’m expecting no favours, the pressure is on him to perform.

“Although the result is not important, the performance is what I’m looking at.

“I still want to prove that I have got that little bit left.

“I’ve had a great camp, I have been working hard with Liam (Wilkins in Devizes), been doing my strength and conditioning with Gary (Turland) two days a week and I have been with Joe (Wrona) this last week as he has come up to Scotland with me.”

Philbin, a former Scotland amateur champion, has won all six of his professional fights to date, but Young is hoping that his experience of 18 wins from 27 fights will give him a bit of an edge.

“He hasn’t fought anyone like me,” said Young. “I know he had a good amateur record and has had a good start to his professional career by this is a six-rounder and it is something that he hasn’t done before.

“I’m here to impress and I’m here to win.”
