SWINDON can claim a new national boxing champion after teenager Jordan O’Donoghue’s success in Yorkshire.

The 18-year-old, a youth boxer with Walcot ABC, clinched victory in the 69kgs class at the National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs Championships in Bridlington.

O’Donoghue, coached by Craig Turner, took on the strong Amy Bullock, of Selby, in a four two-minute round contest and despite the forward moves of Selby, clever boxing from the Wiltshire fighter on the back foot allowed her to unleash some fast shots to take the first round.

The pattern of the contest took a similar course until the last round, which saw Bullock dig deep for a final effort.

But O’Donoghue side-stepped effectively to frustrate her opponent’s attacks and countered to take a split points decision.

O’Donoghue, named the Swindon Advertiser’s Young Sportswoman of the Year in 2014, said: “I just want to say a massive thank you for all the support.

“I’m so blessed to have such a great bunch of friends and family, I really appreciate it.

“Also a massive thank you to my new boxing gym, Downend, Bristol, who have brought me on so much in such a short space of time. I can’t wait to see what’s next to come."
