RICHARD Farnan has been asked to join some of the best trainers in the boxing world to form an advice panel with the WBC.

Kelly Morgan’s manager and trainer returned from the governing body’s annual convention in Florida this week where he was asked to join the likes of Joe Gallagher and Gennady Golvokin’s coach Abel Sanchez to help create a code of ethics for trainers around the world.

Also joining Farnan on the panel will be Stacey McKinley, who is head coach at the world-renowned Kronk Gym in Detroit, and Eddie Mustafa, the head coach at Mayweather’s Gym in Las Vegas.

“It came as a bit of a shock when I was asked to join this panel, but it is a huge, huge honour,” Farnan said.

“The aim of the panel is to provide information to trainers around the world, give advice, tips, videos on hand wrapping, advice on sparring and general tips.

“This will help form a code of ethics for trainers and hopefully will only benefit a boxer’s performance and their health and safety.”

As well as rubbing shoulders with some of boxing’s best fighters past and present , Farnan met Roberto Duran, Roy Jones Jr, Golvokin and Lennox Lewis as well as legendary promoter Don King.

Farnan, who said he is still awaiting news on what is happening with Morgan’s world title shot against super-middleweight champion Nikki Adler, also attended a number of seminars while at the convention.

“It was a great convention, it is great being part of the WBC family,” he said. “It was attended by so many boxing world champions past and present.

“I sat in a number of seminars including a medical one which was very interesting and the mandatories meeting – that was so fascinating to see what fights they are about to sanction.

“But one thing I didn’t get chance to ask was about whether female boxers should be made to join the WBC Clean Boxer Programme.

“Kelly and I both want to sign up and I think every fighter should be made to join.

“Every fighter must tell their coaches what they are doing and taking, we are all responsible but the onus is on the boxer.”
