CIRENCESTER ABC youngster Sammy Varey produced a sensational win in the Minors and Schoolboy Championships, defeating reigning champion Danny Baldwin, from Guildford ABC, who had beaten him last year.
The first round saw Varey dictate the pace in a highly entertaining opening but the second round proved more even with Baldwin trying to get into the bout.
Varey however made no mistakes and beat Baldwin to the exchanges, upping his game in the third to land more point-scoring shots and earning a points decision.
ABA coach Simon Knowles said: “What a result for Sammy, a brilliant win. Baldwin was favourite to go all the way so this was a fantastic result for Sammy and everyone at Cirencester ABC.’’ Cirencester’s Ethan Frayling, having his last bout of the season, produced an excellent win against home boxer Elliot Durbin, from Banbury ABC.
Both fighters took the centre of the ring in the opening round, with Frayling coming off better in the exchanges.
In the second round Frayling upped his game, catching his opponent with solid right-hand punches.
A high-tempo third saw the Banbury boxer battling back gamely with the home crowd behind him, but having no answer to Frayling’s fast hands and strength as the visitor earned a split decision.
Cirencester’s Lewis Varey boxed in the Western Counties finals, but lost on a split decision against Jude Moore, from Downend ABC.
