JAMIE Cox’s trainer John Costello believes that it would be a ‘mistake’ for Rocky Fielding to fight his man.

The Swindon southpaw made it 22 wins from 22 as many fights on Saturday when he took a technical decision over Lewis Taylor to claim the WBA Continental super-middleweight title at Bramall Lane.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist saw his fight brought to a close late in the ninth round due to a deep cut over the right eye of Taylor earlier in the fight following an accidental clash of heads.

When the bout was halted, Cox was 88-83 up on judges Terry O’Connor's and Stefano Carozza's scorecards, while Phillipe Verbeke had the fight 87-84 in favour of the ex-Walcot amateur.

Now with set to get his mandatory shot at the British title, Costello feels that Cox would have too much for reigning champion Fielding.

“If Rocky Fielding wants to take the fight – then God bless him,” Costello told the Advertiser.

“But personally I think we would see a better Rocky Fielding at light-heavyweight – I think that it would be a mistake for him to get into the ring with Jamie at 12 stone.

“If he does take the fight we will treat him with the utmost respect because that is what he deserved.

“But I’m confident that Jamie will do a job on him.”

Although the hope was to have the former WBO European champion out again in July, promoter Eddie Hearn said that it would be more that Cox would be back in the ring in September.

And while it is unsure who Cox will face for the Lonsdale strap, Costello is not worried who his man will face.

“Jamie beats them all – I’m confident of that,” the trainer said.

“They are, at some stage, going to have to stand there and trade with Jamie.

“George Groves doesn’t move his feet that much and Rocky Fielding, although he does a bit, he is an awful lot slower (than Taylor).

“Jamie just wants to fight and if you ask him he will want to face a world champion next week.

“But what we are going to see if that the more Jamie fights the better he will be.”
