AFTER making a successful comeback to the ring on Saturday Jamie Cox is ready to begin his journey to another world title shot.

Cox made a triumphant return to the squared circle at the weekend, where he dispatched Harry Matthews with a vicious right hook in the second round of their super-middleweight showdown at the O2 Arena.

The Swindon southpaw will now face fellow Matchroom fighter John Ryder in his next bout, scheduled for Saturday, May 5 on the undercard of Tony Bellew's rematch against David Haye.

Ryder, who like Cox, has come up to super-middleweight from middleweight, goes into the fight following an impressive win of his own, as he defeated Patrick Nielson via knockout on the undercard of Cox’s WBA world title clash with George Groves back in October.

Speaking after his fight, the 31-year-old says he is ready and raring to go to face Ryder.

Despite many people suggesting a wise move for Cox would be to return to middleweight, they Swindon man is adamant he is better suited to 168lbs.

“Weighing 12 stone is hard enough. 11 stone 6 is a very small man for someone who is 5’11, George Groves is just a very big super-middleweight,” said Cox, who is ready to start the rebuilding process towards another world title contest.

“I’m a good size. John is shorter and stockier than I am, we are super-middleweights.

“I respect John as a fighter and he has had some great fights. I’m taking it very seriously, he has a great trainer.

“I’m looking forward to it. It is going to be a great fight on the David Haye v Tony Bellew undercard, what a great show.

“I’ll give 110 per cent to this sport and I’m looking forward to driving on and challenging for another world title.”

With both fighters signed to Matchroom, promoter Eddie Hearn says there is plenty at stake for both men as they prepare to go toe-to-toe.

He said: “It’s two guys coming up from middleweight and John Ryder had a big win on the same night as Jamie against Groves.

“That knockout win has put him in the top five with a lot of the governing bodies now. It’s a massive fight in the career of both guys.

“If they want to go on and challenge for another world title, they have to win on May 5, and the loser will not go on to challenge for a title, maybe never again.

"There is plenty on the line and both lads have stepped up to the plate. It is a great fight.”
