BOXER Jamie Cox will go into tonight’s bout as the slightly heavier man as he prepares to face John Ryder at the O2 Arena.

Super-middleweight Cox registered 11st 13lbs on the scales, which is heavier than when he fought George Groves for the WBA world title last October, while Ryder came in at 11st 12ibs 2oz in yesterday’s weigh-in.

The fight, which features on the undercard of David Haye’s heavyweight rematch against Tony Bellew, will be the second time Cox has boxed at the O2 this year.

His last contest was a brief one, as he dispatched Harry Matthews in the second round with a strong right hook.

Despite the contest being short-lived, trainer John Costello says it was a useful exercise for his Swindon southpaw.

“We got everything we wanted from the last fight. The reason Jamie boxed then was because there was a big gap to May 5,” said Costello

“Matchroom said they could get him on at the O2 and it was great. It kept him ticking over, and although he didn’t have a world beater that night, he still had a very tough kid.

“He (Matthews) was competitive when he fought Chris Eubank Jr. He lasted six rounds against him and each round was a contest.

“I think he was a good opponent for Jamie, and Jamie showed a lot of patience that night. There is a lot more patience in his work.

“We got everything we needed. I just want him to go out on Saturday night and put in a good performance behind his boxing.”

Cox, who spoke at Thursday’s final press conference in London, is looking forward to the fight, as he aims to propel himself back into contention for a world title.

Ryder will be hoping to do the same, as the Matchroom duo square up this evening on a show that also features Luke Campbell, Joe Joyce and Paul Butler.

“It’s a great addition to the card, me fighting John, and I am really excited. I’ve worked hard and I am looking forward to the fight,” said Cox

“I know where I went wrong in that fight with George, he’s a great operator and a great champion. I’ve learned from that loss and I’m looking to rebuild and fight for a world title.”
