WALCOT'S Connor Wells has struck gold for England at the Three Nations tournament in Edinburgh.

This schoolboy tournament featured the cream of young boxing talent from England, Wales and Scotland.

The 14-year-old easily beat Scotland’s Sean Monahan on points in the final to ensure a dream international debut.

The Dorcan pupil, the English Class Three, 57kgs, champ competed at 58kgs for this event, and is now British champion for his age and weight.

From the opening bell Wells attacked with confidence, landing with left jabs and straight rights.

Monahan had no answer to the young Swindonian’s combinations, and Wells received a 9-0 verdict from the ringside judges.

England coach Les Brooking said: “Connor showed maturity beyond his years, his opponent just could not cope with his strength and skill.

“I was very impressed, he did everything we asked perfectly.”

Wells said: “I really enjoyed my England debut.

“I’ve been training hard for months and felt in good shape before the contest.

“I must thank Harry Scott and all the Walcot coaches who have worked with me this season.’’ Walcot chief coach Scott was delighted, saying: “Connor is a good lad who trains hard and deserves his success.

“To become British champion by a 9-0 margin is some achievement.’’ Wells became the seventh Walcot boxer to don an England vest in the past five years.

But there was despair for clubmate Ryan Martin when no opponent showed up at his weight, 66kgs.

Martin said: “I‘m gutted, I easily beat the Irish champion a couple of weeks ago and was looking forward to facing the best from Wales and Scotland.”

Coach Scott shared his disappointment, saying: “I feel sorry for Ryan because he has trained hard for no end result but I’m sure he is the best in Britain for his age.

“No-one wants to challenge him it seems!"
