WALCOT brought the curtain down on the amateur boxing season with a successful visit to the North Herts ABC open air event in Hitchin, writes DAVE VEYSEY.
A baking hot day was more suited to tennis at Wimbledon than outdoor boxing but the Walcot contingent put on a good show for the locals.
Leading the way was national schoolboy champion Ryan Martin, who beat Gaurav Saroye from the host club on points.
The tall Saroye proved an awkward opponent, continually holding whenever Martin attacked during the opening round.
The middle session saw the Greendown pupil evade the grasping Saroye to land with straight rights and left hooks.
Saroye continued to hold during the final round and was lucky not to have points deducted.
A rather scrappy affair ended with a unanimous points victory to the Swindonian.
Martin, pictured, said: “I’m pleased to have won under such hot conditions but I’m not totally happy with my performance.
“I know I can perform better than that but he was awkward and kept holding me whenever I got close to him.
“I hope I meet him again next season in the championships when he won’t be allowed to hold as much.
“I’m going to have a break for a few weeks now and then start to work towards the Junior ABAs next season.”
Completing a winning double for the central Swindon gym was clubmate Dilpan Patel.
The 15-year-old beat Luton’s Jason Davey by a majority points verdict.
Patel was always the busier of the two boxers, landing with fast left jabs and straight rights.
His southpaw opponent enjoyed occasional success but the Greendown schoolboy was always in command.
The only surprise was that a majority, not a unanimous verdict was returned.
Patel has now won both his bouts for Walcot.
But there was disappointment for the third Walcot boxer on show – Sean Kemble.
The Dorcan pupil met Charlie McCormack from Waltham Forest ABC in a bruising encounter.
Despite bravely giving his all in an exciting contest, Kemble lost by a unanimous points decision.
Chief coach Harry Scott was pleased with his three youngsters, saying: “It’s been a long, hard season for the boxers but I’m proud of the ways my boys performed in the hot sun today.
“Walcot have enjoyed another great season, and I must thank all my coaches and committee for their efforts.”
