THERE was joy and despair in equal measure for Walcot ABC at the Western Counties Schoolboy Final at Bideford in North Devon.
Both Cullum Large and Patrick McDonagh won to become Western Counties Champions, but Callum Wells’ controversial defeat meant Walcot were denied the treble.
All started well for the Swindon gym, with Cullum Large, 12, defeating Eric Squire from Exmouth on points in his Class 1 (34kgs) encounter.
A tight opening saw Large end the first round 1-0 up, only for Squire to pull back to 2-2 after the middle session. During the final round, the young Swindonian edged ahead to complete a 5-3 points victory.
Completing the double was Patrick McDonagh, 12, at Class 1 (44kgs).
His win over Mackenzie Waller of Poole ABC was more clear cut, with a strong southpaw jab and hard straight left contributing to a 5-1 points success.
At Class 2 (48kgs), Callum Wells was 2-0 up going into the final round against Barnstaple’s Harry Sugars, and looked well placed for a fairly comfortable points win.
An even-looking last round with few scoring shots seemed to secure the treble for Walcot, but to the amazement of all in the arena Sugars was awarded the decision by a margin of 3-2.
Chief coach Harry Scott was stunned, saying: “Sometimes in boxing you get bad decisions but this one was a real stinker.
“Even the Barnstaple boxer said he thought we won, as did the referee and all the coaches I spoke to afterwards. I am disgusted by this result and will be making an official complaint to the ABA about the decision.”
The next round is to be held in Southampton on Sunday, where the two Walcot winners will be joined by their England Schoolboy international Tommy McDonagh, who received a bye at this stage.
There was double delight for Walcot ABC after their outing to Frome ABC in Somerset.
A packed Frome Football Club saw Said Eltuyev and Danny O’Reilly emerge victorious.
Eltuyev started the ball rolling with a polished display against Ashley Wilkins from Devizes ABC.
The 11-year-old landed with fast left jabs and straight rights throughout the three rounds to deserve his unanimous points success.
His coach Harry Scott was delighted with the result.
“That’s Said’s third win in a row and he’s looking a real prospect for the future,” he said.
Completing the win double was 17-year-old O’Reilly.
He was involved in a classic bout with Danny Milner from Trowbridge. In only his second contest, O’Reilly showed courage to withstand an early onslaught from Milner and counter with hard rights of his own.
This was a bruising encounter between two strong boxers, with the Swindonian’s greater accuracy clinched him a unanimous points verdict from the ringside judges.
His coach Brian Roberts said: “That was a tough bout. Danny boxed to instruction, he’s a strong lad and I‘m very pleased with him.”
