Walcot's Ryan can't wait a minute

Walcot ABC’s Ryan Martin set the NACYP Championships alight with a 47-second victory at the Broad Plane Boys’ Club at Bristol, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

The 15-year-old two-time National School Boy Champion was in electrifying form as he dismantled the plucky Lewis Bremner of Wells ABC in the most brutal fashion during his Class A 70kgs encounter.

Seconds after the opening bell he slipped inside Bremner’s defence to land with a heavy straight right which dispatched the Somerset boxer to the canvas.

Bremner bravely beat the referee’s count but probably wished he hadn’t as a body shot and a uppercut from the Swindonian meant he hit the deck once again.

Again he bravely beat the count but the referee had seen enough and waved him off after just 47 seconds to save Bremner further punishment.

Martin, pictured, said afterwards: “That’s my first bout this season and I’m obviously pleased how it went. I’m not quite at my peak just yet but I will be soon.

“I would like to thank my coach Harry Scott for his dedication and also my dad Lee for his support. I feel good and I am confident I can go all the way in this competition.”

Fellow National Schoolboy Champion Connor Wells added to the Swindon gym’s success with a comfortable points win over Alex Kelsall-Spur from Lympstone ABC in a 63kgs match.

The 15-year-old Dorcan pupil started well and was 4-0 up after a one-sided opening round. The middle session was closer as Wells took his foot off the gas, but he still finished the round with a lead of 6-1.

Wells coasted the final two minutes to record a victory by an eight points to two margin.

He said: “I have been suffering with a heavy cold so I wasn’t quite at my best, but I won easily enough and I know I’ll improve for the next round.”

Completing the Walcot treble was Rahim Nanji, also 15.

He met cageyopponent in Mayflower’s Coran Holden at 54kgs.

The first two rounds saw few scoring shots landed but the better work came from the Ridgeway pupil who led 2-0 after two.

During the final round both boxers increased their work rate but Nanji’s greater accuracy was rewarded with a 4-2 points success.

Unlucky not to complete the four-timer for Walcot was the gallant Said Salem.

He met Bideford’s experienced Ben Owen and put up a terrific display in defeat in only his sixth contest, the 18-year-old pushed the 35-bout Devonian all the way before losing by a 7-6 points margin.

Chief coach Harry Scott was delighted with all his boxers, saying: “All four boxed well and did Walcot ABC proud.

“Ryan was in devastating form, while Connor and Rahim won with something to spare. Said showed great courage in defeat, and he will have learnt a lot from today.”
