Penhill enjoy island travels

Penhill Amateur Boxing Club had a sensational trip to the Isle of Wight in a Mainland Select versus Ventnor Isle of Wight Select clash.

Starting the line-up for Penhill was schoolboy Paul Johnson who was against home favourite Jack Parkes from Ventnor ABC over three rounds of all-action boxing.

The first round saw both boys hold the centre of the ring with Johnson connecting with the cleaner shots. In the second round Johnson was landing good straight left hand and right hand punches.

The third saw Johnson take a public warning, but this did not seem to change the decision, with Johnson winning on majority points decision.

Kane Jones was up next against Callum O'Hearn from Ventnor ABC.

The first round saw Jones go after O'Hearn, landing clubbing hooks and forcing him onto the back foot.

In the second round, Jones landed a straight right hand which shook O'Hearn and forced the referee to give him a standing count.

Jones was slowly tiring in the third round, with O'Hearn up on his toes and moving, but the Penhill bull terrier continued with his onslaught to take a majority decision.

Curtis Bowers was on next, facing Brandon Strange from Waterlooville ABC. Bowers was landing the cleaner punches and left jabs in the first round, but Strange battled back gamely.

In the second round, Bowers landed a straight right headshot, leading to the referee gave a standing count to Strange and giving Bowers the incentive to come on strong. In the third, both boys went toe-to-toe, with Bowers winning on a unanimous points decision.

Completing the line-up for the Penhill foursome was heavyweight Phill Williams against Tewksbury ABC’s Adrian Williams. The Penhill boxer dominated the first round, catching his opponent with left and right hand punches.

In the second round, Penhill’s Williams upped his tempo, catching the Tewksbury man with three-punch combinations and leading to the referee giving him a standing count.

Both boys were starting to tire as they come into the third round, with Penhill’s Wiliiams winning on a unanimous points decision.

ABA coach Simon Knowles said: “What a brilliant day we all had.

“They all boxed really well. I would also like to thank Micky Gilliver for his help and support. Well done everyone.”

Penhill travell to Blandford on Saturday where schoolboy Jake Knowles is due to make his ring debut against James Hill Perrin from Bideford ABC.
