Double defeat for Penhill boxers

Penhill amateur boxing club travelled to Wales on Thursday evening with two junior boxers, Paul Johnson and Kane Jones.

The evening started with Johnson fighting in a 48 kilo bout against Wesley Hanns from Chepstow ABC.

Johnson started the first round with some lovely combinations to the head and body, and was landing the cleaner shots.

The second round saw Hanns swinging wild punches which Johnson defended well, and he countered with some solid shots of his own.

The third round was all-action with both boys all out for the win, and it was Johnson that lost out on a majority split decision.

Next up was Jones, pictured, in a 72 kilo bout against D Phillips from All Saints ABC.

In only his second bout for Penhill, Jones could do nothing wrong, keeping his hands high and regularly throwing combinations that could not miss.

In the second round both boys upped the pace but by this time, Jones was well on top.

Jones started the final round strongly, forcing his opponent to take standing count, but Phillips came back swinging wildly and Jones got drawn into a slugfest.

Phillips then landed a shot which put Jones down and the referee stopped the fight.

Assistant coach Micky Gilliver said: “I would like to thank both boys for terrific performances. A great evening of boxing was had by all.”
