Family fotunes for Macca and Kelvin

KELVIN Young and Andrew ‘Macca’ McCaffrey are working on their final preparations at the Horseshoe Gym ahead of their next ring assignments for Swindon-based promoter Keith Mayo in Devon on Saturday, March 6.

Trainer Islan Eltuyev has ordered them to dismiss any notion of brotherly love when they step into the ring at the Torquay Riviera Centre – the pair have brothers as their respective opponents.

Middleweight Young faces Gavin Brook, 25, over four three-minute rounds, the first time the Swindonian has tackled the distance.

He said: “The longer rounds mean you have to adjust your pace and vary the delivery of the punches you throw, but this is an integral part of a young professional’s education.

“As an amateur at Penhill it was four two-minute rounds that I boxed, so the training has had to focus on that adjustment.

“I haven’t seen Gavin box, but he won his last fight just before Christmas against a previously unbeaten fighter so has to be respected.

“But that was his first win in six fights so, he will also be wary of me.”

Young, 22, won his debut at the Oasis last December with a confident points verdict over Jamie Ambler.

Joining him on the Mayo Promotions bill in Torquay is Calne-born Andrew ‘Macca’ McCaffrey, who is keen to exorcise the ghosts of what he feels was a denied victory in his Oasis baptism just before Christmas.

The 27 year-old super middleweight said: “I was sure I had done enough to get the nod over Adam Wilcox that night and that has been an added motivation in my training.”

He faces Nathan Brook, 26 – Gavin’s elder brother – in another four three-minute round clash.

McCaffrey added: “We have both had the one fight so there is little to separate us in terms of experience.

“It is also his first outing over then distance so that should also even things out.

“He won his only fight against a guy who was another debutant, so there is very little to read into that.”

Tickets for the Torquay show are available from Keith Mayo on 07789 890453.

  • WALCOT’S Mark ‘Beano’ Reynolds embarks on the most important competition of his boxing career on Sunday when he competes in the regional round of the Senior ABA Championships at Bristol.

The popular heavyweight, pictured right, knows this is the most important tournament in amateur boxing in this country, with the ABA Champion usually gaining a place in the England team.

With the London Olympics just over two years’ away, that provides an extra incentive for the 30-year-old.

Last season, the first time he had entered the competition, he reached the last four only to have to pull out with an injury.

Reynolds said ahead of the fight: “I’ve trained for about six months for this competition and I feel fit and strong.

“I’ve sparred over a hundred rounds in the gym against numerous opponents and I feel sharp.

“Last year I reached the semis, which was a fair effort – but this time I want to go all the way.”

He encounters Nathan Madge from Forest Oaks ABC in the Forest of Dean.

Chief Coach Harry Scott said: “Mark has trained hard and deserves his chance.

“It won’t be easy but we all wish him well.’”

The event is being held at the Broad Plain Boys Club, Bristol.

Boxing starts at 2pm and spectators can pay at the door.
