Young happy to be by the seaside again

KELVIN Young is full of energy and determination in readiness to face Gavin Brook on Swindon-based promoter Keith Mayo’s next bill in Devon tomorrow (March 6).

And it has rekindled memories of his amateur days for the former Penhill ABC middleweight, who traded in his vest last year, for this assignment at the Torquay Riviera Centre.

Young said: “Devon was a good place to go for me when I was boxing for Penhill and I hope it will be the same for me as a professional.

“But that is where any similarity ends as it is much tougher in the paid ranks.”

The enthusiasm and dedication of Young, 22, has impressed trainer Islan Eltuyev, who has put in place a strength-sapping routine at the Horseshoe Gym.

And the former Soviet Union light welterweight champion could not disguise his pride in his protégé.

Eltuyev said: “Kelvin knows that he will benefit in the ring from all the effort in preparation and it is a lesson he has learnt very well.

“He listens well and follows the instructions perfectly.”

Young’s clash with Brook is scheduled for four three-minute rounds and he admits the need to adjust to the revised schedule.

He explained: “The first fight against Jamie Ambler was over six-twos so that was like adding a couple of rounds to what I had done at Penhill.

“Now the sessions are that bit longer it requires an adjustment of pace to make sure you do not run out of steam.”

Plymouth-based Brook won his last outing against Lee Churcher, but that was his first win in six attempts as a pro.

And Young has a loyal contingent of followers travelling from Swindon to the Devon coast to support him tomorrow.

Tickets for the Torquay show are available from Keith Mayo on 07789 890453.
