KELVIN Young claimed his second successive win since trading in his vest with a determined points victory over Plymouth’s Gavin Brook at Keith Mayo’s six-bout promotion in Torquay on Saturday night.
The 22-year-old Swindonian made full use of his extra height and reach to get behind the jab and set the pace from the first bell.
He had Brook trapped against the ropes and connected with a six-hook volley to underline his authority in the opening session.
But Young was always mindful of his Devon rival’s potential – Brook had stopped his last opponent inside a round – and kept his guard tight to limit the impact of any artillery aimed in his direction.
Some left hands did work their way through, but the former Penhill amateur took them all in his stride.
Young had more in the tank as the fight entered its final two sessions, landing precise clusters of hooks and uppercuts to consolidate his authority on this middleweight clash.
He said: “That was my first outing over four threes and I think I paced it just about right.
“It is all part of the learning curve at this stage of my career and I’m pleased with the outcome – everything went to plan in just the way that Islan (Eltuyev, trainer) thought it would.”
But any thoughts that Young might have of taking a rest can be immediately cast aside.
He is back in the ring next month, with the details of that assignment being announced by promoter Keith Mayo later this week.
