BOXING: Charlie gets Walcot off the mark

Walcot's Charlie Trinder impressed on his debut at the Brecon ABC event in mid-Wales to record the club’s first victory of the season.

The 13-year-old started well against Christian Diston from Chepstow ABC, landing with fast left jabs from the outset.

During the middle session Trinder continued to attack and score repeatedly with his straight shots.

The final two minutes saw Trinder increase the tempo still further, and after three productive rounds he was awarded a unanimous points verdict.

His Coach Harry Scott was delighted, saying: “Charlie boxed well and followed my instructions.”

But there was disappointment for senior clubmate Ben Fitch.

The 23-year-old was returning to ring action after an eight-year lay off, and despite battling bravely found Ryan Delaney from the host club too strong.

In Bristol the previous evening, Walcot's Louis Trinder, 16, had come off second best in his Class A, (66kgs) CYP encounter with Jack Bennett of Broad Plain Boys Club.

  • Just a week after capturing the International Masters Middleweight title following a strength-sapping ten-round battle, Swindon’s newly crowned champion Kelvin Young refused to take it easy.

The 24 year-old fighter was amongst those that completed the Nationwide-sponsored Swindon half marathon on Sunday.

Young regularly pounded the roads around Swindon in the build-up to his title encounter with Birmingham’s Tony Randell so there was no doubting his ability to last this distance in the ring.

But he is the first to admit that a half marathon was a totally different endurance test.

Young said: “Running is just part of the training regime for boxing, designed to build up stamina and strengthen the legs.

“But the main focus of the training takes place in the gym, refining ring technique.

“Track and road athletes train in a different way, so I was never trying to compete with them.

“I was just looking to record a respectable time on the run and finishing around the 1 hour 50 minutes mark did that.

“After the fight at the Oasis, I had a few days off, so only really started focussing on the half marathon on the Thursday before the race.

“I’m due back in the gym on Monday to start getting ready for my next fight in December at Chippenham, but roadwork is definitely off the agenda for the first two weeks – my feet are sore.” Young was sponsored to raise funds for the Open Door Centre, based at St Barnabas Church in Gorse Hill.

And it is the same charity that his manager and promoter, Keith Mayo, did a 20-mile overnight sponsored walk for earlier this year.
