England international Ryan Martin will be the first boxer to enter the ring wearing the colours of Swindon’s newest amateur club The Horseshoe Gym.
Martin, who rose to fame within the amateur boxing scene with former club Walcot, takes part in the second stage of the Clubs for Young People championships this weekend.
The former Walcot boxer now trains at the Horseshoe Gym in Greenbridge having had a year out of the ring after capturing both the CYP and Junior ABA titles.
He also gained the prized England vest – gaining silver at the Three Nations tournament.
But now he is as committed as ever to get back on the title trail after 12 months out of action.
Martin said: “I’m full of enthusiasm and it is great to work with Brian Roberts, who was also one of my trainers at Walcot.
“Dave Carpenter is also a coach at the club so there is a wealth of experience in the gym.”
Martin competes at welterweight (66 kg) in Class C (17-19 years old) and returns to the same Bristol ring at Broad Plain where he saw off luckless Wells rival Lewis Bremner in only 47 seconds when he last competed in these championships two seasons ago.
John Heal from the Empire Gym in the same city faces the Swindonian in the opposing corner on Sunday.
